FROM THE CRITICS

Children's Literature - Norah Piehl

Although this book consists of thirty 9 inch x 12 inch horse posters that can be removed and hung in any horse-lover's room, it can also be read and enjoyed as a traditional book and a useful introduction to horse breeds. On the backside of each poster is a one-page introduction to a particular horse breed, including its history, national origin, common uses, and characteristics. These facts are easy and enjoyable to browse through; unfortunately, though, the book won't stand up to repeated readings, since the posters are also designed to pull out easily. The posters themselves are lovely color photographs that will appeal to most horse lovers. From striking close-ups to panoramic landscapes showcasing groups of horses to exciting action shots of horses racing and jumping, the posters show each breed to its best advantage and provide a wide variety. 2003, Storey Publishing, Ages 8 to 12.
