Owning a swimming pool is a popular fantasy for many people, albeit one that requires a fairly large expenditure and a great deal of ongoing maintenance. Donegan, a writer and editor on home improvement, and Short, a pool designer and builder, show readers the many types of pools and spas that are available, as well as what is required to design, build, and maintain them. There is more to building a pool than digging a hole: it must be carefully situated, with factors like sun and wind direction (not just aesthetics) taken into account; and the type of pool must be determined, whether in-ground (concrete, fiberglass, or vinyl), above-ground, spa, or hot tub. The authors show many available designs and describe what additional equipment (such as pumps or filters) is needed. Pool maintenance and chemistry are covered in detail since pools require regular upkeep. Other topics include safety, landscaping, and somewhat related subjects like ponds and saunas. Colorful photos supplement every section of this informative title. Recommended for all public libraries. Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
