400 Wood Boxes: The Fine Art of Containment & Concealment - Book Reviews,
by Sterling Pub, Veronika Alice Gunter (Editor)
400 Wood Boxes: The Fine Art of Containment and Concealment FROM THE CRITICS Library Journal A box is a simple item in concept, at least until it meets the artistry of a master woodworker. Then it can be transformed into a thing of transcendent beauty. This tightly focused book, produced on heavy, glossy stock, pictures and captions 400 such masterworks by artists like Jim Christiansen, Glenn Elvig, and Roger Gifkins. The initial reaction while browsing the book is one of awe and wonderment-to say nothing of a touch of overload. The two-dimensional photography, while well executed and produced with great precision, leaves one flat (no pun intended) and wanting more; a secondary photograph from another perspective would have been extraordinarily useful. Additional descriptions of wood selection or design process would enhance future editions. Nevertheless, as it sits, this is a delightful art book to be sampled and savored over time. For large libraries.-Alex Hartmann, INFOPHILE, Williamsport, PA Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
