Poland - Book Reviews,
by Kate A. Furlong
Poland FROM THE CRITICS Children's Literature Part of the "Countries Set II" geography series, this book tries to give young audiences the essence of Poland. The country was founded in A.D. 966 by Duke Mieszko, who also brought Christianity to Poland. Through a series of conflicts, Poland lost its separate identity and became part of other countries, including Austria and Russia, for 123 years. During World War I Poland declared itself an independent nation. In the early days of World War II, Germany attacked Poland. At the end of the war, the then Soviet Union controlled Poland. In 1980 the Poles won the right to organize a union. Called Solidarity, the union played a vital role in Polish independence from the Soviet Union and, ultimately, the change to a democratic society. Written in short sentences and using a controlled vocabulary, the book seeks to entice readers to learn more. The book includes a Fast Facts section, an index, glossary, two recommended web sites, and a recipe for beet soup.
