Farmer's Market: Families Working Together
- Book Review,
by Marcie R. Rendon

From Booklist
Gr. 4-6. Handsome color photos and well-written text combine in this introduction to farmers' markets, as seen through the eyes of two successful truck-farming families. A brief overview of a Minnesota farmer's market leads to introductions of two local families: the Thaos, of Hmong descent, and the Kornders, of Polish-German ancestry. Emphasizing the family cooperation required to keep a farm going, and with a special focus on the children's participation, the book also concentrates on moments in the growing season, from the planting of greenhouse seedlings to fall harvests, noting farming techniques and equipment. Nice attention is also given to the international variety of foods and specialties available at market. Readers, particularly urban kids, will learn much from this attractive photo-essay that shows what's so special about farmers' markets: you meet the people who grow the food. Gillian Engberg

Farmer's Market: Families Working Together

FROM THE CRITICS

Children's Literature

This interesting and colorful book follows the lives of two families in the Midwest who are truck farmers. The Thao family, immigrants from Laos, and the Kornder family, longtime residents of the area, both participate in large-scale farming, trucking their products to local farmers' markets for the consumer to buy. Although the Kornders have lived in the area for many years, their family once emigrated from Poland. Both families have a long history of family farming. Using colorful photos, the book chronicles life on a family farm, although this is farming on a large scale. The story stresses the families' reliance on each member to produce and bring in the harvest. It is a year-round process, and the text emphasizes the joy that the families take in producing beautiful fruits and vegetables. It is a wonderful story of how Americans of all origins have similar goals for their families. An excellent addition to diversity study. 2001, Carolrhoda Books, . Ages 7 to 9. Reviewer: Meredith Kiger
