FROM THE CRITICS

Children's Literature

Kids can learn a lot about the Philippines from this little book. There are many short, tothepoint sections with snappy titles and clear photos or illustrations presented attractively. Whenever possible, children or youth are the subject of the pictures or the text, and the facts presented are aimed at the young. Kids are encouraged to trace the map of the islands, locate North, etc., and color in the oceans. They learn about the nocturnal animal, the tarsier, which lives in the rain forests and can spin its head halfway around on its neck! They are introduced to a typical multigeneration family living in a compound. The custom of pakikisama is explained whereby Filipino kids are taught not to make fun of schoolmates. School is taken very seriously, but kids also play interesting games and participate in religious festivals. There are fun modes of transportation like the jeepney (jeeptaxi) or the water buffalo ride. Food like polvoron, a powdered milk candy; sleeping mats made of sweetsmelling pandanus grass; beaches; lagoons; smiling faces—all beckon to the young reader. A glossary, pronunciation guide, short bibliography, and index complete this charming travel book, which is one in "A Ticket to" series. 2001, Carolrhoda Books, Ages 6 to 10, $22.60. Reviewer: Carol Raker Collins
