The Literacy Map: Guiding Children to Where They Need to Be (K-3)

FROM THE CRITICS

Children's Literature - Meredith Kiger

This 174-page book pretty well condenses the Title I literacy program used in low income schools throughout the United States. Many of the tried and true strategies from the Title I approach are made available to the classroom teacher whose class does not qualify for the federally sponsored program. Largely based on research and practice developed at the Ohio State University, it is a concise approach to the strategies needed to provide a comprehensive program of reading and writing instruction from kindergarten to third grade. Dr Gentry, an experienced teacher and professor, refers to it as a map for negotiating the complex journey of learning to be proficient at reading and writing. He has condensed the approach into a useful and easy to understand format for all ranges of teachers, inexperienced to experienced. From the simplified benchmarks for each grade level to the lists of appropriate books, and forms for keeping records on each child's progress, the information is easy to understand and put into practice. There is an excellent bibliography provided for further reading.
