FROM THE CRITICS
Children's Literature - Eleanor Heldrich
Artist Maurice Pledger's illustrations tame the jungle world wherein all the jolly animal friends such as deer, lions, elephants, butterflies, meerkats, and giraffe play together, care about one another and try to help each other. The pretty pictures make this a soothing bedtime book for younger children. With one giant pop-up at the end and lift the flaps throughout, a tale is told of Lani Lion looking for someone to play with, but finding that most of the other animals are too slow, tire too easily, too jumpy or too tall to hide. It is only at the end with one last flap to lift that Lani finds the perfect friend, a leopard cub, to play with. On the inside front cover, seven of the animals and insects in the book are described and a little information about each is given. 2003, Silver Dolphin, Ages 2 to 5.
