Eva's Summer Vacation: A Story of the Czech Republic

ANNOTATION

Eva, who lives in Prague, spends her summer vacation with her cousins in the Moravian countryside village of Hluk, where she attends her aunt's wedding and explores the countryside.

FROM THE CRITICS

Children's Literature

Eva is a young girl who lives in the village of Hluk in the newly formed Czech Republic. The story follows Eva as she leaves her home to visit her aunt in Moravia on the eastern side of the Republic. It is a special time, as Eva's cousin is getting married, and Eva will get to see a traditional Czech wedding with special costumes and special foods. The story is told in Eva's own words as she eXperiences new sights and sounds and the joy of visiting with relatives for the first time. Colorful, folklike paintings of Eva's adventures fill each page as the reader is treated to this touch of Czech culture. Familiar phrases in the Czech language are included in the teXt, and a section with facts about the Czech Republic is included at the end. While a partial pronunciation guide for Czech words is included, treating all Czech words in the same way would be an added plus. The book, however, is an interesting introduction for youngsters to a different culture. 1999, Futech Interactive Products, $15.95 and $5.95. Ages 4 to 7. Reviewer: Meredith Kiger 1568998023
