FROM THE CRITICS

Children's Literature

Alexandra, who lives in Bern, receives letters from her grandmother who lives in the little mountain village of Törbel. The letters describe everyday life on her grandmother's mountain farm and the events in the mountain village—herding the cows up the alp, finding the three escaped goats, feeding a baby goat with a bottle, harvesting hay, and going to the fair in the village of Visp. In the last letter, the grandmother is very excited because Alexandra will arrive soon to spend Christmas in Törbel. The book ends with basic information about Switzerland, the village of Törbel, and a map of Switzerland, which shows the location of Bern, Törbel, and Visp. The author grew up in Switzerland and lives in Törbel. Her stunning, award-winning artwork perfectly complements the realistic description of life in the Swiss mountain village. This book is a treasure as it fully captures the renown charm and beauty of Switzerland and its mountain villages. 1999 (orig. 1991), Soundprints, and $5.95. Ages 3 up. Reviewer: Ute Krappen-Clancy
