Grade 7 Up An admiring biography of Henrietta Szold, the mother of Hadassah, which, although clearly and competently written, is not as exciting as it might have been, given the dramatic and adventurous details of Szold's life. Her great accomplishments, such as the building of Hadassah and Youth Aliyah, and her brave work rescuing Jewish children from the Nazis are included, as well as her pioneer work with refugee settlements in Palestine and the building of the great Hadassah hospital in Jerusalem. Krantz gives a proportionately smaller amount of her attention to Henrietta's German-Jewish background and to her devotion to her family through years of separation. She notes also her subject's deep love of America, although she was so often far from home. The main focus of this book, however, is on the dramatic events in the life of this Jewish heroine, for those in need of an easy-to-read biography of a woman of action and valor.
