FROM THE CRITICS
Children's Literature - Sally Niezgoda
Downhill skiing can be a lot of fun. This hardcover book introduces the sport with bright pictures and informative large print text. The child is told about some of the basic aspects of preparing to ski. Warm clothing, including mittens and snow/ski pants, and the proper equipment are necessary for this outdoor winter sport. The length of skis depends on the height of the child. The bindings on the skis need to be adjusted to the proper setting. A protective helmet is stressed for the protection of the young skier. Lessons are important for the safety and enjoyment of skiing. This is an excellent source for young readers to learn about an exciting individual sport while increasing their reading ability. A child can almost feel the sunshine on a brisk morning by looking at the photographs in this book. There is a web site, as well as other resources, listed in the back of the book. It is part of the "Wonder Books Nonfiction Level Two Readers" series. 2003, The Child's World, Ages 5 to 7.
