This unique visual guide takes readers on a voyage of discovery through the inner parts of the human body. The author explores the human body as if it was a map divided into regions. He examines the body systems (circulatory, nervous, skeletal, muscular, integumentary, endocrine, lymphatic, respiratory, digestive, excretory, and reproductive) and explains their functions. Fornari's colorful diagrams, illustrations and cutaways are exquisite.

Body layers are "peeled" away in illustrations interpreted by the narrative of a natural teacher. With insight, a conversational style, and sense of humor, Mr. Parker artfully manipulates details that could easily overpower into a sparklingly lucid description/explanation of how the human body works.

Gr 5-10-- An exceptionally well-done atlas. Parker's informative, interesting narrative combines definition, explanation, and miscellaneous items. A preface explains how the book is arranged and how some of the photos were taken. The main text examines the body part by part from head to toe, plus ``the development of a baby.'' Each double-page spread follows the same format: an introductory overview, a large full-color diagram of the main topic, plus a variety of small diagrams and color photos around the perimeter, focusing on particular aspects of the workings of that body part. The illustrations are accompanied by extensive captions, along with general items of interest, such as ``why you burp'' or a brief explanation of palmistry. The pictures are finely detailed and beautifully drawn, and have a profusion of labels on each. The shortcoming here is the predominance of males in the photographs. The human body is mapped here in detail from head to toe, and in that order. Sections entitled "Head and Neck," "Upper Torso," "Arm and Hand," "Lower Torso," and "Leg and Foot" neatly group a huge amount of information into meaningful, manageable units. Throughout, various organs are illustrated from both the outside and the inside; separate body maps are provided where anatomical differences occur between the sexes; and the labeling of many muscles and bones is done in Latin. In all sections, scientific photographs have been included to supplement Fornari's interesting medical illustrations, which make use of such classical images as Michelangelo's "David". The book also features boxed "USA Today"-type graphics that provide information in a lighthearted manner, and a very complete index--which makes this book an effective reference to the workings of the human body.
