FROM THE CRITICS

With Cartoon Network airing a new animated Teen Titans series, fans will likely be interested in seeing the comic that inspired it. In the 1980s, the New Teen Titans was one of comics' most popular super-team series, following in the footsteps of Marvel's X-Men in featuring strong female heroes and emphasizing characterization. This book reprints the first five issues of the second New Teen Titans series, from 1984 to 1985. Enigmatic team member Raven is the daughter of the other-dimensional demon Trigon, who has been attempting to overpower her and claim her soul. When she can no longer resist, she becomes his pawn, and the other Titans-including Nightwing (Dick Grayson, who was the original Robin), Kid Flash (who is now simply the Flash), Wonder Girl, Changeling, Cyborg, and the alien princess Starfire-must stave off his invasion of Earth. Even in such an action-filled story, Wolfman keeps the characters' inner lives in the spotlight. Perez's work from this period set a new standard for superhero comics with its meticulous attention to realistic detail. The Titans' first battle with Trigon is recounted in the hardcover New Teen Titans Archives, Vol. 1 (DC Comics, 1999). Recommended for most collections, for teen and adult superhero fans.
