FROM THE CRITICS
Library Journal
This exciting series on travel adventures, which kicked off last year, now totals 11 titles, five of which were published in the spring (besides these two, there are also titles on caves, cliffs and canyons, birdwatching, and paddle sports). Presented on slick, heavy paper in an easily accessible format, all the guides are made up of two sections. The first focuses on preparation for a travel adventure and stresses the importance of understanding survival skills. In the case of Backcountry Treks, these chapters include "Planning a Trip," "Getting Equipped," "Survival Basics," and "Seeking Challenges." The second section focuses on the chosen destinations, which include various regions of the United States and Canada and, in the case of scuba diving, the Caribbean and Mexico. The guides are written by experts in their fields, include lavish illustrations and good maps, and provide useful information on prices, lodging, excursions, tours, and outfitters. Highly recommended for all public libraries. [Five more titles are scheduled to debut this fall: Australian Outback, African Safari, Snow Sports, Star and Sky, and Rain Forest.--Ed.]--George M.
