Developing Library and Information Center Collections: Fourth Edition FROM THE PUBLISHER
This new work addresses the challenges of electronic publishing and puts issues of collection development into perspective, providing a broad understanding of the collection development process. The book covers all phases of collection development-from needs assessment, policies, and the selection process (theory and practice) to publishers, serials, protection, legal issues, and censorship and intellectual freedom.
SYNOPSIS
Provides practical information on materials producers and distributors, community survey techniques, policies, materials selection, acquisition, weeding, collection protection, and evaluation in order to minimize the variables involved in the selection process. Also explores library cooperation, copyright, and censorship as they affect library collection development. As might be expected, the fourth edition is heavily inflected by electronic developments, and though longer than all previous editions, has deleted some material. Every chapter is followed by a summary, suggested readings and list of relevant websites. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
FROM THE CRITICS
Library Journal
Last revised in 1995, this comprehensive collection development textbook has been updated to "reflect the changing environment of collection management," particularly in the area of electronic resources. Because of the necessity of keeping the final book to a reasonable length, materials from earlier editions are now for the first time available on the Internet. In particular, what had been Chapter 4 ("Selection Process: Theory") and two appendixes--"Book and Electronic Collection Policies" and the International Coalition of Library Consortia (ICOLC) "Statement of Current Perspective and Preferred Practices for the Selection and Purchase of Electronic Information"--can be found at lib.lmu.edu/dlc4 and www.lu.com.--WWW Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.\
