The New Palgrave Dictionary of Economics and the Law (3 Volumes)
- Book Review,
by Peter K. Newman (Editor)

From Library Journal
This third set of dictionaries under the Palgrave name maintains the very high standard of its predecessors: The New Palgrave: A Dictionary of Economics (Norton, 1989) and The New Palgrave Dictionary of Money and Finance (Stockton, 1992). Although called a dictionary, the book offers 399 signed articles that are interdisciplinary and encyclopedic in range and depth, most written by American or British academics from major institutions. Topics range from airline deregulation and insurance to contracts and crime as a distinct form of behavior. The writing level assumes at least advanced undergraduate understanding of economics and more than a little math. About 20 percent of the topics have appeared in the earlier titles, but the articles here are new and often much longer. Physically well produced (though unfortunately lacking an index and CIP data), this is a superior subject dictionary, but its depth of coverage will limit its use to all but the most ambitious undergrads. Strongly recommended for libraries serving graduate programs in economics, law, and public and social policy.?Patrick J. Brunet, Western Wisconsin Technical Coll. Lib., La CrosseCopyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Book Description
A great deal of economics is in fact about law - the functioning of markets, property rights and their enforcement, financial obligations and so on. Yet these legal aspects and problems are almost never addressed in the academic study of economics. At the same time a great deal of law, an increasing proportion of litigation for example, is about economics, and yet the drafting and administration of laws often ignore economic principle. The New Palgrave Dictionary of Economics and the Law is uniquely placed by the quality, breadth and depth of its coverage to address this need for building bridges. Drawn from the ranks of academics and professional lawyers and economists in eight countries, the 340 contributors include the leading exponents of their specialities. Among them are Nobel laureates in economics and eminent legal scholars. The New Palgrave Dictionary of Economics and the Law will become a benchmark for reference of the highest quality.

The New Palgrave Dictionary of Economics and the Law (3 Volumes)

FROM THE PUBLISHER

The New Palgrave Dictionary of Economics and the Law is set to become the standard reference in its field, building a much-needed bridge between economics and the law. Over 300 minds in the fields of economics and law, including Nobel laureates in economics and eminent legal scholars, explore the intricate intersection of the two disciplines in 339 essay-length entries, each written especially for this collection. From antitrust to divorce law, from game theory to wildlife law, this newest Palgrave brings together diverse opinions on an increasingly important interdisciplinary area of investigation.

Providing a unique analytical overlay to the A-to-Z organization, an invaluable subject classification system lists each article under seven main groups (society, economy, polity, law in general, common law systems, regulation, and biographies). Each category is further divided into subheadings and articles appear under as many categories as relevant, making this a powerful tool for both academic and corporate professionals.

Over 400 topics including:

antitrust policy arbitration bankruptcy and its reform bureaucracy as spontaneous order child custody consumer protection contract remedies due care expressed and implied terms in contracts game theory and the law insider trading law and economics from the economics perspective performance rights regulation of automated trading systems rules of evidence social justice tax evasion third party liability valuing life and risks to life wildlife law

FROM THE CRITICS

H. Leskovac

The 'New Palgrave' name is associated with two of the most respected scholarly reference sources in economics: The New Palgrave: A Dictionary of Economics and The New Palgrave Dictionary of Money and Finance.
