More important than words here are the high-quality photographs illustrating each step, especially if there's no expert or teacher nearby. Former magazine journalist Rae does a creditable job of organizing concepts and contents, and explaining the most technical of terms in plain English. Techniques are presented in a range of skill options, catering to both novice and highly professional craftspeople. Some of the tips on how to save time and money are ingenious; for example, recycling Popsicle sticks and gluing them to sandpaper to clean up tool marks in hard-to-reach corners. Barbara Jacobs

This how-to primer is divided into six parts: tools and materials; box and case construction; doors; bases, feet, and stands; frame construction; and tabletops and work surfaces. Copious color photos illustrate processes and objects, and line drawings detail intricacies. The major parts begin with overviews, and proceed to specifics, with safety warnings integral to all explanations. This book begins so much at the beginning that it shows the aspirant how to build a shop with special racks and shelves to hold the various tools one will be buying. The book looks so good, and makes the procedures so vivid, the novice might believe she can learn even the more complex processes.
