"We are watchers. We are travelers. We are listeners. We are hunters. We are family. We are keepers. We are wolves." When two wolf cubs are left with their uncle while the rest of the pack goes out to hunt, they receive a daylong lesson in what it means to be a wolf. Uncle Wolf encourages them to listen more deeply, and they realize there are more sounds than they ever thought the world could hold. He tells them to look carefully, and they discover sights they had never observed before. The learning goes on, and the cubs' initial disappointment at not being included in the hunt disappears as the special world of the wolf is opened up for them.

Human cubs will love "running" with the wolf cubs as they explore the splendid world the wolves inhabit. Lucia Guarnotta's highly detailed illustrations capture the noble nature of these loving and playful animals. (Ages 5 to 8) --Emilie Coulter

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 2-Julietta's paean to wolves offers adoration rather than information. The animals talk in simple sentences, reminiscent of conversations between Dick and Jane. "No, no! We want to hunt! We're big and brave!" declare the young wolves. The adults offer platitudes about the sterling qualities of their species. Not even Guarnotta's attractive illustrations can redeem the cloying text. Young readers searching for an introduction to wolves would be better served by Jean Craighead George's Look to the North: A Wolf Pup Diary (HarperCollins, 1997) or Jim Brandenburg's Scruffy: A Wolf Finds His Place in the Pack (Walker, 1996).Kathy Piehl, Minnesota State University, Mankato Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc.

FROM THE CRITICS

Children's Literature - Leslie Rounds 1559717130

When mother wolf goes out to hunt she leaves her two cubs in the care of their uncle. Uncle Wolf takes the cubs on a hike through the forest, providing gentle instruction on wolf behavior, including hunting, fishing, and paying close attention to what is happening around them. Lovely, sharp, detailed, photographic-like illustrations, usually one full page to each double-page spread, accompany the serviceable but not especially compelling text. Many pages include attractive borders, spot art, and paw print tracks that stand out on the white paper. Although the somewhat wordy text is mildly interesting and does include a lot of information about wolf behavior, it is the remarkable illustrations that will make this book appealing to children and attractive for their parents. 2002, Northwood Press,
