PreSchool-Grade 2-Julietta's paean to wolves offers adoration rather than information. The animals talk in simple sentences, reminiscent of conversations between Dick and Jane. "No, no! We want to hunt! We're big and brave!" declare the young wolves. The adults offer platitudes about the sterling qualities of their species. Not even Guarnotta's attractive illustrations can redeem the cloying text. Uncle Wolf takes the cubs on a hike through the forest, providing gentle instruction on wolf behavior, including hunting, fishing, and paying close attention to what is happening around them. Lovely, sharp, detailed, photographic-like illustrations, usually one full page to each double-page spread, accompany the serviceable but not especially compelling text. Many pages include attractive borders, spot art, and paw print tracks that stand out on the white paper. Although the somewhat wordy text is mildly interesting and does include a lot of information about wolf behavior, it is the remarkable illustrations that will make this book appealing to children and attractive for their parents. 2002, Northwood Press,
