White Minority in the Caribbean - Book Reviews,
by Howard Johnson (Editor)
White Minority in the Caribbean FROM THE CRITICS Midwest Book Review The White Minority in the Caribbean is an outstanding collection of essays by historians, anthropologists, and a political scientist representing an attempt to locate a discussion of the white minority in the Caribbean in the mainstream of the social scientific literature on the region. This is especially important because white minorities (particularly in their elite dimensions) continue to exercise a political and economic influence disproportionate to their numbers. The involvement of white women in entrepreneurial activities, the political divisions and inter-ethnic relations within the white community, and the rise and fall of the white elite are among the fascinating topics discussed. The territories surveyed include the insular Caribbean as well as the mainland countries of Belize and Guyana. Although the focus is directed on the whites (especially as they functioned as political, social, and economic elites) the discussions do not exclude a consideration of the other social groups with which they interacted. The White Minority in the Caribbean is a substantial and welcome contribution to
Caribbean studies and ethnic history.
