Going back to work after having a baby? You don't have to wean your little one. In Nursing Mother, Working Mother: The Essential Guide for Breastfeeding and Staying Close to Your Baby After You Return to Work, Gale Pryor has written a nuts-and-bolts guide for nursing and working at the same time. Pryor breast-fed each of her two children while working full-time outside the home, and her experience and voice of reassurance informs this book. She makes a strong case for breast-feeding: not only is it good for your baby, but many working women find that it is the easiest way to care for their child, and for themselves. Early chapters cover breast-feeding basics. Later chapters focus on preparing to go back to work, instructions on pumping (equipment and positioning), how to manage life at home and at work, and how to cope if you "fall apart" when your baby is six months old (common among new mothers who work outside the home). The book describes a typical day of pumping and nursing for babies of various ages, how to combine nursing and formula feeding, and how to stop leaking breasts (discreetly press on your nipples with the back of your forearms or with your elbows). Appendices include a list of resources for nursing, working mothers and a sample proposal for pumping space.

From Booklist
New mothers may view the involved parenting that breast-feeding requires as incompatible with commitment to a career rather than as an effective strategy for blending the two sides of their lives into a new whole. In this sensitive, insightful guide that acknowledges the concerns working mothers face, Pryor maintains that breast-feeding provides a way to bond with the baby, nurture a child's healthy growth, and gain confidence as a parent. Pryor supplements the emotional support she provides with practical tips on getting started and coping with setbacks and also with specific tasks facing working mothers, such as choosing a breast pump, integrating pumping sessions into daily work schedules, and maintaining milk supply. Kathryn Carpenter

Essential advice and encouragement for the millions of breastfeeding mothers who work.

From the Back Cover
Breastfeeding provides a mother and her baby with their most intimate bond. In these encouraging pages, Gale Pryor shows the working woman how to keep alive this supremely rewarding attachment with her child when she returns to her job. Pregnant women making plans for baby, mothers on maternity leave, or moms already back at work will discover in this book why many working women find breastfeeding the easiest way to feed their babies. Pryor covers everything a working mother needs to know about: the basics of breastfeeding, including nursing positions, milk supply, and feeding schedules; choosing and using a breast pump; ways to store and transport milk safely; how to get support from coworkers and childcare helpers; how to go on a business trip without having to wean; and much more. Nursing, Pryor writes, is one of many means by which the mother-baby attachment is made secure. With warmth and wisdom, she reveals how a mothers confidence that she has done whats best for her baby and has forged the closest ties possible with her child is the key to meeting the challenges that come with being a working mother. I wish I had written this book. Easy to read and empowering, Pryor makes clear how, not just why, a mother will combine breastfeeding and paid employment. A 'must read' for any woman considering such a combination of experiences." --Kathleen Auerbach, Ph.D., IBCLC, Private Lactation Consultant Pryor demonstrates the importance of breastfeeding for both baby and mother. A how-to book from a mother who herself has accomplished the difficult but rewarding combination of working and nursing. Viola Lennon, Co-Founder of La Leche League "This book nurtures the new mother and teaches her how to manage what many, perhaps even her doctor, say can't be done. Without someone to guide her through it, this new mother could easily make the same mistake so many have in the past believe that if she works she can't breastfeed. Gale Pryor is like the experienced older sister who wants the best for this new mother and her baby, and she says, 'Yes, you can. Here's how'. William Sears, M.D., and Martha Sears, R.N. A thought-provoking look at motherhood and returning to the work place. Wise counsel and practical suggestions for the mother planning to combine working and nursing. Kathleen Huggins, author of The Nursing Mother's Companion
