In these eleven essays, historians from the United States and Great Britain consider the imperialist origins of commemorative practices. They also consider the resistance to such practices, as it manifested itself in Tirol, Eastern Europe, Poland, and Germany. The legacies of these practices are considered, as is their continued contestation.
