Classical Kids: An Activity Guide to Life in Ancient Greece and Rome
- Book Review,
by Laurie Carlson

From School Library Journal
Grade 4-6-Divided into two sections, this book provides brief background information on these two ancient civilizations, followed by a number of projects in several categories that include eating, the arts, and dressing up. The activities vary in type, difficulty, and actual relationship to the culture they represent. Overly simplified black-and-white line drawings illustrate the texts. While this title offers a few new ideas, the "Civilization Project Books" and "Craft Topics" series (both Watts), which have full-color illustrations, clear instructions, and step-by-step examples, are better choices.Susan Lissim, Dwight School, New York CityCopyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Classical Kids: An Activity Guide to Life in Ancient Greece and Rome

ANNOTATION

Demonstrates life in ancient Greece and Rome, and the contributions of those cultures to modern civilization, through hands-on activities such as making a star gazer, chiseling a clay tablet, and weaving Roman sandals.

FROM THE PUBLISHER

Travel back in time to see what life was like in ancient Greece and Rome while having fun with such hands-on activities as making a star gazer, chiseling a clay tablet, weaving Roman sandals, and making a Greek mosaic. 100+ line drawings.

FROM THE CRITICS

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot

Teachers, homeschoolers and kids who love projects will have plenty of fun with these activities. Cook Greek and Roman foods, put on your own play, create a bas relief, learn the Greek alphabet and Roman numerals and then try your hand at geometric shapes. In addition to the crafts, there is lots of information painlessly incorporated into project introductions. A treasure trove for teachers with one caveat, the bibliography is a bit dated.
