Building Democracy in South Asia: India, Nepal, Pakistan SYNOPSIS An analysis of South Asia's experience with democracy in the 1990s, examining the course of democratization amid constraints of state consolidation, national integration, and conflicting notions of individual and group rights. Looks at four sets of developments, including dilemmas produced by changes in caste politics, the end of the Congress Party's dominance in India, and the constitutional monarchy in Nepal, and exposes the underlying goals of these events to identify regime objectives and responses to various types of challenges.
