Seven Tales of Woe is a book that dwells heavily on the sufferings of mankind. In "The Wage Slave," Hans Kriedenhoff is tormented by poverty and racism, while in "A Tale of Love," an English gentleman flounders on the jagged rocks of love. In "Steel Town," Johnny Degroi realizes that the forces of hell are stacked against the working class and turns to a life of crime, while in "Nightmare," Hildegard Brunner comes to challenge his friend's racism. In "Angus Muller," an old farmer is tormented by the death of his two sons and by greedy bankers, while in "The Saga of James Cooper," a naïve journalist turns to violence and revenge against the establishment guardians. Finally, in "Henri Proudon," a devastating breach of manners occurs when the daughter of a proud Frenchman is violated by a brutish American shortly after the Yankee attack on the Confederate states.
