- Book Review,
by George P. Jan

Book Description
China is a rapidly developing world power. Its rise is causing some concern about the “China threat” to the United States. It is important to the American people to have a better understanding of the true conditions in China so we can deal with it rationally and effectively. The main purpose of this book is to provide the reader with a comprehensive description and objective analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of present-day China. Special emphasis is placed on U.S.-China relations. It covers China’s history, land and people, political system, economic development, educational, scientific and technological developments, military power, social and cultural changes, Chinese nationalism, overseas Chinese, the Taiwan issue, China’s global influence, U.S.-China relations and the prospects of China’s future development in the twenty-first century and its impact on U.S.-China relations. The “China threat” notion is critically assessed. The book also makes some suggestions to enable the United States and China to manage their conflicts and to peacefully co-exist to promote mutual interests, international peace, security and prosperity.
