The Magic of Scrub Holler
- Book Review,
by Lanny Gibson

Mary Pat Boian, Lovely County Citizen, January 8, 2002
"Gibson's humor is dry as July and his observations are seasoned and rare."

E. Alan Long, Carroll County News, December 21, 2001
"...every story here has the ring of truth...gentle, self-deprecating humor, and an eye for detail."

John Lumb, The Ozarks Mountaineer Magazine, April/May, 2002
"There is a yarn in this book that every reader can relate to...this book is a keeper."

Arkansas Democrat Gazette, June 16, 2002
"Farming accomplishments so inept, there oughta be a book about them. Which there is." Charles Allbright, Arkansas Traveler

From the Inside Flap
Assorted views of farming life in the Ozarks, compounded with rue and laughter. "His talent for capturing life on the farm with warmth, humor, and insight transfixed the readers...There just ain't too many farmers who can write as well or spin a tale as tricky as Lanny Gibson." Ken O'Toole, Editor, Carroll County Newspapers

My farm is Arkansas scrub: steep hillsides sliding off into deep hollers, knee-high stumps hiding in golden brown broom sage, rocky fields, sagging fences, weeds. Vintage Ozark Mountain Country it ain't. No matter what I do, other farmers spitting tobacco juice drive by to look. It makes their day telling their neighbors: "Gibson's farm's growed up worse'n anybody's." I go to the feed store, the sale barn, the hardware. They look at me like my donkey don't bray. I want everything: I want chickens that ain't dying, cows that ain't scrawny, hogs that ain't runts, roofs that ain't leaking, goats that can't jump -- but most of all I want my wife to be happy. I'm trying everything... (excerpt from Introduction)
