Concepts in Detail: Scoring - Wrong Basket I never thought a topic as small a this one could take a full page. The intriguing part is that this happens more than you might think. Let's explore and see if you don't agree. If you are new to the game, I guarantee you will see the following before to long. A red player begins the second half and forgets that they changed directions at half time. They score in blue's basket and everyone looks confused. What to do? OK, this is not difficult, but I've seen this screwed up a number of ways. What should happen is that: 1. The goal is counted for the blue team. 2. Red gets the ball again on a designated throw-in 3. The goal is noted in a footnote with no individual scoring credit Don't let the official call this a technical. Don't let the official disallow the goal. This type of goal counts. RB 5-2-3 Another slant on this same wrong basket theme is the following: Red team passes the ball around in the correct half of the court. Blue team hits the ball loose and everyone collides to try and get the ball. A red player recovers the ball and in the confusion forgets what direction they should go. The red player goes to the wrong end and scores in blue's basket. Basket counts, right? Wrong! The instant the red player crosses the division line, the call is over and back. No score is allowed on this play. This happens so fast both the official and both coaches may miss it and treat it like a normal wrong basket play. SCORING - WRONG BASKET - BY A TEAM Finally, the second half begins and both teams go in the wrong direction for a number of minutes. Points are scored and fouls are committed. When the error is discovered, what should the official do? The only thing the official should do is call time and turn the teams around. All time consumed, fouls committed and points scored count. RB 4-5-4
