Edvard Grieg: Diaries, Articles, Speeches (Edvard Griegs Briefwechsel / Herausgegeben Von Klaus Henning) - Book Reviews,
by Edvard Grieg, et al
Diaries, Articles, Speeches FROM THE CRITICS Library Journal A companion volume to Edvard Grieg: Letters to Colleagues and Friends (LJ 3/15/00), also edited by Grieg scholar Benestad and translated by Norwegian music specialist Halverson, this collection of documents completes their project, which aims to make the Norwegian composer's most important writings available in English. Although Grieg (1843-1907) did not write an autobiography and only kept a diary during two periods of his life (1865-66 and 1905-07), all of his writings are to some extent autobiographical, and therefore these documents combined with those in the previous volume present a very clear view of the life and times of the man and the artist. Organized chronologically by type (public and private writings, speeches, etc.), this work allows for easy reference. The editors supply annotations and footnotes to explain anything that would be unclear, but the very nature of its contents precludes a continuous narrative. An appendix contains a chronological list of his works as well as significant life events. This important reference work is recommended for all academic libraries. Timothy J.
