FROM THE CRITICS
Library Journal
This work was initially published in 1885, and the competent translation conveys the conservative, patrioteering tone of the original text. L'Armee Francaise is, however, best approached as a reference work rather than a history. Among 19th-century France's most renowned war artists, Detaille included over 300 line drawings and 20 color reproductions. Their detailed accuracy in depicting physical types, as well as weapons and uniforms, presents a visual image of France under arms that by itself justifies the purchase price. Organized by branch of service (staff, infantry, cavalry, and so on), including North African and colonial forces, the volume is also a mine of information on French orders of battle, command structures, and organization not readily available in English. Highly recommended for all public and private libraries of military history.-- D.E. Showalter, U.S. Air Force Acad., Colorado Springs
