In Sunset to Sunset, Thomas Lawrence Riggs tells the remarkable story of his life and work among the Lakota Sioux along the Missouri River in southern Dakota. Born to missionary parents on the Minnesota frontier, Riggs grew up among Indian companions. His own work among the Dakota at Oahe Mission began during horse and buggy days and extended to the age of automobiles and airplanes.
Riggs recalls the United States-Dakota Sioux Conflict of 1862, his role in the aftermath of Sitting Bull's death, and his participation in the last winter buffalo hunt of the Lakota Sioux.
His knowledge of the Dakota/Lakota language and customs, along with his skills as horseman, carpenter, and stone mason, served Riggs well throughout his career. He considered his work among the Sioux the great privilege of his life.
