There are many different kinds of tarantula, from different parts of the world. For most people, though, "tarantula" means one of the large, hairy spiders that come from North, Central and South America. Some of these live in dry, semi-desert areas, such as Arizona, USA, or in Mexico. Others are found in the jungles of South America. The best-known of these spiders is the Mexican red-kneed tarantula. Big and Hairy - Tarantulas are big. The bodies of North American tarantulas can be longer than an adult's middle finger, and their leg span is as wide as an adult's hand.
