About the Author Michael Stone was born in Latvia in 1910 and grew up in Moscow. The Communist Revolution caused his family to relocate to Berlin where he attended school and began to work in his father's wholesale hoisery business. When the Nazis became too oppressive, he emigrated to the United States where he started and then sold a firm manufacturing an anti-corrosive chemical for power plants and railroads. He subsequently joined a financial planning and investment company, retiring in 1987 to work on his memoirs. Stone has produced articles on pioneer aviation topics and was a regular contributor to The Long Island Press. He is also a published poet. Mr. Stone continues to reside in New York with his wife of nearly 60 years. He has a son and two grandchildren.
