If you have a free-spirited friend who jumps from place to place, relying on the kindnesses of friends and the availability of their couches--slip this book into his or her suitcase next time you meet.

Published by Manic D Press, whose other titles include The Underground Guide to San Francisco and Signs of Life: Channel-Surfing Through '90s Culture, this book features chapters written by different authors from Manic D Press's stable. Chapters range from the extremely practical "Sofa Surfing with HIV" by Justin Chin to the more philosophical "Slack Attack"--a reflection on the sofa-surfing lifestyle by Wammo (yes, that's his name). The writers, though not exactly household names, know their stuff. They'll tell you what to pack, how to ingratiate yourself with your host (make sure your feet don't stink, for example), and how to live in your car if you have to.

This slim volume brims with helpful advice for the "modern gypsy," but its lively, opinionated voice will keep even more traditional travelers entertained. --Rebecca Agiewich

Sofa Surfing Handbook: A Guide for Modern Nomads

FROM OUR EDITORS

The Barnes & Noble Review
The folks at Manic D Press might well have called their new travel guide "Generation X Hits the Road." Or "Travel On the Cheap For the Slacker On the Go." Instead, they dubbed this wholly original effort THE SOFA SURFING HANDBOOK and packed it full of just the kind of info one needs to see the USA not on $50 a day or even $25, but on the most limited of budgets. THE SOFA SURFING HANDBOOK contains the kind of tips you just won't find in your more traditional guides, like how best to deal with a highway cop at 4 a.m., tips on making the most of long-distance bus travel, house-sitting as a way to save on lodging, traveling with HIV, and much more. Think Dean Moriarty and Sal Paradise on the road at the turn of the millenium and you're getting warm.
