Brief Lives: Biographies of Sitters and Artists in the Garrick Club Collection

"Since publication of Dr. Geoffrey Ashton's Pictures in the Garrick Club in 1997, growing interest in the portraits has encouraged the Club to commission a companion volume of 'Brief Lives" which provides more extensive biographical information on the sitters and artists than it was possible to include in the picture catalogue. On this occasion, Kalman A. Burnim, has joined forces with John Baskett to compile the information. Edward A. Langhans has contributed a number of the notices." In the study of the British theatre and theatrical portraiture, the Garrick Club's collection is of major importance with works by Zoffany, Reynolds, Lawrence and less well-known master of this genre, Samuel De Wilde. There are also many important later 19th- and 20th-century portraits.
