The Theatre at Butrint: Luigi Maria Ugolinis Excavations at Butrint 1928-1932 FROM THE PUBLISHER
"Butrint, an Epirote port on the southern Albanian coast, was a cultural and political centre throughout classical antiquity and into the middle ages. The Italian Archaeological Mission, directed by Luigi Maria Ugolini, undertook major excavations of the Hellenistic and Roman theatre between 1928 and 1932. The original reports and surveys are published here for the first time and provide a significant contribution to our knowledge of the development of Butrint." New studies of the theatre and its context are provided by J. Wilkes and F. Sear. The sculptural group found by Ugolini is reassessed by I. Pojani. The impact of the Italian mission and its geopolitical context in inter-war Italy are discussed in contributions by O. Gilkes, L. Miraj, A. M. Liberati and B. Polci.
SYNOPSIS
Excavated between 1928 and 1932, the theater at Butrint was uncovered by the Italian Archaeological Mission to Albania, but Ugolini's partially completed 1934 report lay unpublished until now. The report is accompanied by a new summary, a new assessment of the theatre in relation to other ancient theaters, a description of the events of the excavation, and an examination of the social and political contexts bearing on Ugolini's work. The report is presented in the original Italian, while the rest of the material is in English. Distributed by the David Brown Book Company. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
