Alaska Atlas & Gazetteer
- Book Review,
by Delorme

From Book News, Inc.
DeLorme gets better with each state atlas. Alaska may, however, be the apogee. It is a joy to browse--glaciers (white with blue contour lines) and blue water-fresh & salt interweave in fascinating intricacy. Maps are at the scale of 1:300,000 for more accessible areas, 1:1,400,000 for the wild north and western half of the state. A fold-out shaded relief map gives a sense of mountain, marsh, river valley, and seashore. The gazeteer includes 16,000 listings of named features--mountains, lakes, bays--as well as populated places. City maps of the three largest cities with street indices. Ten pages cover recreation. Based upon USGS topo maps, the DeLorme editions are supplemented with trails, fishing sites, ski areas, docks, the Iditarod trail.... This is the first perfect bound atlas--a construction that may fail in the use of such a large (11"x15<1;/2>") format. At such a minimal price, replacement will not be difficult. Annotation copyright Book News, Inc. Portland, Or.
