About the Author
Born in Tennessee, Johnny Molloy moved to Knoxville in 1980 to attend the University of Tennessee. The lure of nearby Smoky Mountain National Park was too hard to resist. In spite of a disastrous first camping trip, Molloy developed a life-long passion for the outdoors, which he continues today, 15 years and 1,300 nights later. He is the author of several hiking and tent camping guides to the Virginia, West Virginia, and Tennessee areas and lives in Nashville.

This loop takes you along the crest of the Blue Ridge into the upper Moormans River watershed and back around to the high country. Ply the AT and savor some views before entering the North Fork Moormans River valley where effects of a 1995 flood still show. Camp in the vicinity of Big Branch Falls before heading to South Fork Moormans River valley, where deep pools and waterfalls await. Next day, camp in the upper part of the valley before rejoining the AT and cruising the high country on the park s rocky spine. Travel distances are divided fairly evenly, but your last day is the longest when your pack will be lightest. In late spring and summer, bring a fishing rod and swimming trunks. Be apprised that this trip entails several crossings of the above rivers. If the water is high, save this loop for another time.
