FROM THE CRITICS

Venk Lakshminarayanan

This book is designed to discuss the applications of the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The book is divided into two portions, one dealing with the basic principles and theory of ELISA and the other addressing the practical applications. The purpose is to introduce the experimenter to ELISA. It is directed toward individuals with varying degrees of work with this assay system. The book can serve as both a teaching tool and reference manual for individuals involved with the ELISA. The overall objective of the book is met and provides useful and necessary insight. The book is targeted toward any individual who uses the ELISA system of assay. As stated previously, it will serve as a good teaching tool as well as a reference manual for more in-depth use of the system. The book contains many figures, including graphs, tables of data, and schematic drawings depicting the interaction of antibodies and antigens. The only drawback to the illustrations is the shading. These figures are done in black-and-white, and the shading makes some of the figures confusing. I find the book useful and insightful. It provides helpful information for all individuals, from the novice to the experienced. Its best feature is the organization of material. By separating the book into two primary sections, the user can focus on the theoretical or practical applications of the ELISA. I consider it a worthwhile resource.
