Wu's photographs are remarkable in every way, especially in the photographer's precise presentation of detail: Whether's it's the most complex coral formation or the best-camoulflaged bottom dweller, Wu's subjects are brilliantly depicted. McAlpine's text also deserves special applause. Far from the usual throwaway captions that accompany books like this, his is a thoughtful, intriguing, informed commentary that goes beyond what's pictured on the page.

Undoubtedly one of the finest underwater photographers in the world, with credits in National Geographic and Audubon, Wu showcases his abilities to dazzling effect here. The 400-plus color photos transport readers to some of the most exotic and popular scuba diving areas in the world-including Antarctica, the Red Sea, the Caribbean, and the Gal pagos Islands-while McAlpine's text describes them, addressing ecological problems and, in some cases, progress. The richness of photographs and text combined makes this reviewer want to pack her gear and head out right now. There are only two drawbacks. First, the book omits large parts of the divable world: South Africa and the U.S. Atlantic coast north of Florida. Further, the book is of coffee-table size and weight, which makes it difficult to recommend to libraries.
