It is intended primarily as a source of reference for archaeologists, museum staff, art historians and those studying design. The descriptions and illustrations of the tiles are split into thematic groups for ease of reference and the gazetteer provides contextual settings. It is based both on tiles found in situ on Somerset sites, and from collections in Somerset museums.
