Paint and Color in Decoration
- Book Review,
by Farrow & Ball

Book Description
Paint and Color in Decoration celebrates the work of some of the greatest names in interior design, from Robert Adam to David Hicks, and reveals the techniques and materials they pioneered. It is a fascinating history of 400 years of paint, color, and decorative style from Farrow & Ball, the world's leading manufacturer of traditional and modern fine paints.

This volume explores the process of making fine paints and the varying effects produced by different formulations, finishes, and painting methods. Through a wealth of illustrations and in-depth analysis, the book demonstrates what we all instinctively know: color is an essential element in interior design and decoration. The colors have names almost as rich as the history of the houses they adorn, with Passage Yellow, Feasting Green, and Cook's Blue among a panoply of hues whose origins and adaptations for the home are described here in detail.

A source of inspiration for professional and amateur decorators and interior designers alike, Paint and Color in Decoration contains a wealth of ideas and practical information at a time when historic paints have never been more in fashion.

Paint and Color in Decoration

FROM THE PUBLISHER

"Paint and Color in Decoration explores the process of making fine paints and the varying effects produced by different formulations, finishes, and painting methods. Through a wealth of illustrations and in-depth analysis, the book provides a history of color in painted decoration, revealing how the generally muted colors of the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries gave way to the lighter, brighter palette of the late eighteenth century. The book then traces the further evolution of taste and fashion in color through the strong, intense shades favored during the early nineteenth century and the rich polychrome of the Victorian era. Bringing us up to the present day, Paint also surveys the unprecedented eclecticism and diversity of the twentieth century culminating in the recent explosion of interest in historic and traditional colors." FROM THE CRITICS

Library Journal

Helme, a director of Farrow & Ball, a U.K. paint company, and architectural historian Friedman give a well-executed examination of the use of color and paint in interior decoration from the 17th century to the present. They cover the historic, socioeconomic, and artistic factors that influenced the use of a particular color in the home and review the architects, designers, and artists noted for their innovative use of color in domestic interiors. Most of the book focuses on in situ examples of paint finishes and color on walls and ceilings, divided by color into whites, reds, greens, yellows, and blues. A full-page photograph of the example is accompanied by an explanation of its importance. Recommended for academic and professional collections as well as those that feature historic preservation of houses. Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
