Balthus
         Editorial Review

Balthus
- Book Review,
by Jean Leymarie

From Library Journal
This monograph is a new, revised edition of a work originally published in 1979 and long out of print. The text is considered authoritative on the life and work of this cryptic 20th-century master artist, and additional reproductions of notable paintings, several of which have never been reproduced previously, appear in the new edition. Although his significance has long been acknowledged, Balthus has not been well served in art historical literature. Only one major work exists: an important catalog, Sabine Rewald's Balthus ( LJ 6/15/84), which accompanied a major exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1983. Art libraries without the 1979 original should acquire this edition; specialized collections may wish to consider its purchase for the additional illustrations. Further, large public libraries lacking a work on this painter's moody, figurative art may also consider it--if they can afford it.- Paula Baxter, NYPLCopyright 1990 Reed Business Information, Inc.
