FROM THE CRITICS
Children's Literature - Michele Coulombe
How heavy is an elephant? Why do elephants have trunks? If you know a child interested in elephants, this book would make a fantastic resource for such a curious reader. For example, the many uses of the elephant's trunk is highlighted, including how elephants use their trunks to drink, to pull food that they want to eat off of trees, and to pick up grass and fruit. They even use their trunks to spray themselves with water when they are hot and to spray dust on their backs to keep cool! Such interesting facts are presented in an easy-to-read format, with only a couple of sentences written in large letters on every other page. Delightful photographs highlight the main idea presented on the facing page. A glossary with definitions for words such as "spray" and "flap," and an index introduce readers to some standard elements of nonfiction books. In addition, suggestions for other books and websites are listed at the end. This book is another edition in the "Animals I See at the Zoo" series. 2002, Weekly Reader Early Learning Library,
