Czech Republic

FROM THE PUBLISHER

Once part of communist Czechoslovakia, the land that is now the Czech Republic has endured years of foreign occupation and cultural oppression. Today, Czech culture has made an energetic comeback, with Czech music, literature, drama, and traditional arts earning worldwide acclaim and recognition. From handmade wooden puppets to beautiful Bohemian crystal, from the medieval town of Cesky Krumlov to the modern capital of Prague, and from the festive polka to moving symphonies, this book investigates the traditions behind one of the world's youngest countries and celebrates the spirit of freedom that inspires its people today.

FROM THE CRITICS

Children's Literature - Ruth Buchholz

Although the Czech Republic was founded only in 1993, the history and culture of its people is centuries old. This well-written, up-to-date (post 9-11) book explores their history, geography, politics and lifestyles. The historical relationship between the United States and Czech Republic is also discussed. Vivid photographs, maps and an "at-a-glance" page includes capital, population, major lakes, and examples of currency. There is a glossary, a list of Czech words, and lists of related books, videos and websites. The publisher gives permission to photocopy a specific map for classroom use. The language level seems too complex for the recommended ages, however, this is an excellent resource for the classroom or library. It is part of the "Countries of the World" series. 2004, Gareth Stevens Publishing, Ages 13 to 17.
