FROM THE CRITICS
B. J. Manaster
This is a second edition of this volume, compiled by the Aspen Health Law and Compliance Center. It serves as a compliance tool for radiology department managers. The main subject areas include legal compliance, JCAHO survey questions and answers, Joint Commission standards, and pertinent reference material. A unique feature is the inclusion of a diskette, which contains forms and other documentation that may be helpful. This book provides easy-to-access information regarding compliance and standards, some relating specifically to JCAHO surveys, and all specific to radiology. It is written for all levels of managers in a radiology department, including the physician QA/QI officer, compliance officer, and radiology director (manager). Part 1, Legal Compliance, offers general sound advice. Case law is cited, but this is not a substitute for specific state laws in some areas. Part II, the JCAHO question and answer section, is very subjective, with little real content. This may serve to demystify the JCAHO process, but is not worth more than a cursory survey. Part III, Hospital Accreditation Analysis, on the other hand, is the most useful section of this book. It is very thorough and is useful for all levels of radiology staff. This will serve as good preparation for surveys. Part IV contains reference materials, with suggested policy wording and multiple forms. This will prove very useful, either to develop new forms or to reassess current ones. Many items that are found in this reference will assist a radiology department in validating current practice or improving current policies and procedures. The book is well worth the investment.
