Gr 7-12-- Jason Feldon's mother is scheduled to be executed for murder in one week, on his 18th birthday. But is she really a murderer? Jason has lived with that question since he was 10 years old, when she was charged with the murder of her longtime boyfriend. Since the conviction, Jason has moved from Florida to New York City to live with his mother's only sister. Then comes a call from the chief detective on his mother's case, and from this point on, Jason's life takes a dramatic turn. Bennett's style is sure to appeal to reluctant readers. The rapid-fire dialogue and short descriptive passages keep the plot moving quickly to its conclusion, and he maintains the suspense and intrigue at an intense level throughout the book. The only weaknesses in the plot are that the true identity of the killer is alluded to too early in the story, and the abrupt ending makes the resolution somewhat anticlimactic. --Kenneth E.
