West New Guinea Debacle: Dutch Decolonisation and Indonesia, 1945-1962 SYNOPSIS
Dutch-born historian Penders (retired from U. of Queensland) explores the final and traumatic years of the Dutch colonial experience in Indonesia, focusing primarily on the period after the official transfer of sovereignty in December 1949. He does, however, trace the West New Guinea question back to its genesis in the 1920s. He also describes and analyzes the emergence of a Papuan national consciousness and the fight for Papuan freedom, including the role of US and Australian policies in those processes. Annotation c.
