The major portions of the book are not written in a style that will attract leisure readers, but the factual presentation will be appreciated by student researchers, and the chapter describing traditions and folklore of the Khoekoe people may be of interest to general readers. The numerous color photographs are helpful, but reflect more modern views; sepia-toned sketches are used to illustrate the historical segments of the text.
