The Ch'i of the Brush: Capturing the Spirit of Nature with Chinese Brush Painting Techniques FROM THE CRITICS KLIATT - Patricia Moore
This introduction to Chinese brush painting presents the reader with a brief history of the art, its styles and its six canons as codified by Hsieh Ho in the 5th century. The author has developed her own principles, including "Leave serious at your studio door." The materials are ink, slate, brush and paper, each explained clearly and concisely. The techniques are illustrated and described step by clearly delineated step. The fun begins in "Part Two: Enchanting Flowers." The iris, the peony, wisteria are here, taking on life petal by breathtaking petal. Rae shows the reader how to paint a panda, too, and ladybugs and goldfish as well. She also gives suggestions for mounting, and for supplies and suppliers. A lovely book. KLIATT Codes: JSA-Recommended for junior and senior high school students, advanced students, and adults. 2003, Watson-Guptill, 144p. illus. index., Ages 12 to adult.
